black friday and thanksgiving

here in Singapore we don't really celebrate thanksgiving or black friday. i know that thanksgiving is something to do with early English settlers and all. but i forgot what black friday was about. i vaguely remember it in history. anyhow, i did a quick search and found this from here:

1. A day of stock market catastrophe. Originally, Sept 24, 1869 was deemed Black Friday. The crash was sparked by gold speculators, including Jay Gould and James Fist, who attempted to corner the gold market. The attempt failed and the gold market collapsed, causing the stock market to plummet.

2. The day after Thanksgiving in the United States. Retailers generally see an upward spike in sales and consider this to be the start of the holiday shopping season. It's common for retailers to offer special promotions and to open early to draw in customers.

Sheryl-
I love, love, LOVE your blog -- I can't remember now how I came across it, but I love checking out all the crafty and artsy stuff!

Anyway, alot of the retail stores open up here super early in the morning, usually between 4-5am for the "early bird" shoppers. It's pretty crazy, but sometimes worth the deals that they have!
